Background

The starting point of this project was a title sequence for a made up TV show or movie. I decided to make my design for a docu-series about Los Angeles in the 1960s and the cults that were the dark side of what so many remember to be such a golden era. This project involved an extreme amount of research, planning, and patience.

process work

One of the biggest tasks, if not the biggest and most important tasks of doing a collage piece is image collection. For this project, I found a significant amount of images, giving me plenty of options to work with. With image collection, research is incredibly important as well. On top of learning more of the history surrounding cults in L.A. and the Manson Family, learning small niche parts of the situations allowed for me to dive into images that may not be understood immediately by the viewer without the knowledge they would gain from watching this fictional docu-series.

type exploration

This project required a significant amount of exploration of how I wanted to treat the type. I wanted it to fit the collage aesthetic, but I didn't want it to feel kitschy. The end result was having each individual word "cut out" on top of the collage.

Animatic

Creating an animatic for this project helped me to imagine the timing and pacing of the project much better, as well as how it would interact with the music I chose to use. Although it is not super detailed, it also allowed me to determine which pieces of the collage would be moving more than others and helping the transitions flow.

process work

The process of working on this piece was very much focused on the pacing of each element, as well as the interactions between the elements. I was also extremely focused on the transitions from scene to scene, and this was a major challenge throughout the process.
